Obama campaign strategist: 'It will be an interesting debate'

By NEHEMIAH MEKONNEN and DAVID KERLEY

President Obama is once again engaged in intense debate preparation at his resort in Williamsburg, Va., getting ready for his rematch with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"I'm not going to get into details about strategic changes that he might make. But I just encourage you to watch and show up. I think it will be an interesting debate," Obama senior campaign strategist David Axelrod said.

The president is under pressure to make a strong showing in the rematch, especially after polls are beginning to show Romney edging closer to Obama in the swing states.

"I don't think in the history of recorded presidential debates has there been such a momentum shift off of the first presidential debate. And so the president has to turn the momentum back in his direction," former presidential debate coach Brett O'Donnell said.

That still has not stopped the president from taking time out to enjoy the scenery in between prep sessions. Meanwhile, the Romney camp is preparing for a different Obama to emerge this time around.

But to senior Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie, the president's message will fail to reach most Americans, regardless of which Obama shows up on Tuesday.

"The country is a center-right country," he said. "They want to have less federal spending. They want to get us on a path to a balanced budget. They want free enterprise-driven economy that fosters job creation, not a government-centered economy that fosters economic stagnation."

As the campaign is drawing down to its last few weeks and both candidates are at their locations practicing, the president's celebrity friends are stepping up to show their support. Morgan Freeman is lending his voice to a new ad for the president. And Bill Clinton and Bruce Springsteen are campaigning in the crucial state of Ohio, all in an effort to those few voters who are undecided in the crucial swing state.

Berman did write DREAM Act, immigration activists say ...

October 12, 2012 | 1:36 pm

Rep. Brad Sherman puts his arm around Rep. Howard Berman in Thursday night's debate (Screenshot from YouTube).

During a debate on Oct. 12, Rep. Brad Sherman, in a bizarre outburst, threw his arm around Rep. Howard Berman, yelling, ?Do you want to get into this??

?This? might have been a physical fight, or it might have been what the two Congressmen were arguing over before Sherman got physical -- namely, whether or not Berman was the original author in 2001 of the DREAM Act, a proposal to legalize some undocumented youth.

Sherman said that Berman was not the bill?s author. Berman, who began the debate at Pierce College on Thursday by touting his authorship of the DREAM Act, which aimed to give a path toward residency and citizenship to immigrants who had come to the United States illegally at a very young age, appeared to accuse Sherman of lying.

On Friday, leaders in the movement for comprehensive immigration reform, immigrant rights advocates and a few of the young immigrants who were the target group for the legislation confirmed that Berman was the original author of the legislation and urged voters in the San Fernando Valley to support Berman over Sherman in the election next month.

?This man [Berman] has represented the community of the San Fernando Valley, the immigrant community, the Latino community with an incredible level of integrity,? Angelica Salas, board chair of CHIRLAction Fund, said during a conference call with reporters on Friday. ?Sherman has not voted the wrong way, but he also rarely engages directly with the Latino and immigrant community in order to speak up on their issues.?

Over the course of this long, expensive and hotly contested race between two Democratic incumbents running against one another for a single seat, Berman has frequently found himself having to argue with Sherman about whether he can legitimately claim credit for certain legislative accomplishments.

In April 2012, for instance, countering Berman?s claims that he secured the funding that sped up construction of a new carpool lane on the 405, Sherman claimed a critical role in the project, particularly at the state level. Berman and his supporters worked hard to convince people otherwise, touting assertions by those involved in the funding process ? including the former Minnesota Congressman Jim Oberstar, who had been the ranking member and then Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee when the funding was approved. Oberstar said that it was Berman, not Sherman, who was ?the driving force? in getting the project sped up. Still, that hasn?t stopped Sherman from claiming credit in town hall meetings, advertisements and other communications.

Friday?s conference call felt similar, although the organizers said that it had not been coordinated with the Berman campaign.

?We?re doing this because we know the guy [Berman]; we love the guy; and he?s our champion,? Frank Sharry, executive director of America?s Voice, a group aiming to promote fair and just immigration reform.?

?Berman, Sharry said, was inspired to write his immigration bill, initially known in the House of Representatives as the Student Adjustment Act, when he met an undocumented honors student in 2001 who told him that she could not go to college because she didn?t? qualify for financial aid.

Moved by her situation, Berman crafted the bill in 2001 with Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), and brought then Congressman Chris Cannon (R-Utah) on to introduce the bill,? on a bipartisan basis.

That year, Sharry said, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), introduced a similar bill, titled the DREAM Act, in the Senate.

?It was understood that both bills introduced in 2001 were companion bills, very, very similar in nature,? Sharry said. ?They both became known as the DREAM Act.?

The DREAM Act came up for a vote in 2010, during the lame duck session of Congress. Cesar Vargas, a national advocate for the DREAM Act and a ?Dreamer? himself, was in the chamber during the floor debate.

?All I remember was Howard Berman, defending the DREAM Act tooth and nail against Rep. Lamarr Smith (R- Tex), when he was calling us criminals,? Vargas said on Oct. 12.

The bill passed the House, but was stopped by a filibuster in the Senate. President Barack Obama used an executive order to implementa number of the provisions contained in the DREAM Act earlier this year.

During the debate at Pierce College, Sherman loudly proclaimed that it was Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D ? Ill.), and not Berman, who had introduced the bill that later became the DREAM Act.

Gutierrez did introduce a bill, the Immigrant Children's Educational Advancement and Dropout Prevention Act, on April 25, 2001, about a month before Berman?s bill was introduced. But that bill, Sharry said, was a ?constituency bill,? from a relatively junior congressman who was not on the Judiciary Committee.

Berman, who was serving on the Judiciary committee, had been in Congress for nearly 20 years in 2001, and he had introduced his bill with a Republican co-sponsor. Consequently, Sharry said, Berman?s bill had much more weight, and ?that really launched what became a drive since then for the legalization of undocumented students.?

Though the bill has had different names through the years, Berman?s act was introduced in each subsequent Congressional session. Sherman, who was first elected to Congress in 1996, did not sign on as a co-sponsor to any version of the legislation until Nov. 29, 2010, just weeks before it was passed by the House on a close floor vote.

?We really worked hard to get Brad Sherman to sign onto this legislation,? Salas, who was speaking of work she did as director of CHIRLA | Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles.

?Brad Sherman had to be convinced that he needed to sign onto this legislation,? Salas said. ?Many times it was very difficult to even get meetings with him on the subject.?

timothywell: How to Leverage Article Marketing for Best Results ...

How to Leverage Article Marketing for Best Results

For years it has been common knowledge that article marketing is very effective for producing excellent targeted traffic. But you may be wondering how this is done, and that is a good question. Excellent questions? and we will talk about that right now.

All parts of your article need to work properly, and that includes your title. One of the best ways to learn about articles is to study successful articles written by others. On the other hand, if you analyze all those bad articles, you?ll find that their titles are not very different from the others. Quite simply, if nobody wants to read your articles, then something is wrong with the titles, generally speaking. You will be overcoming the first big hurdle when you are able to put strong titles together that get the job done.

Each article you produce has to stand on its own because it does need to make an impact. Even though the content you?re providing is free, you need to get people to understand, trust and like your articles. Obviously if none of this works right, then you know what the outcome will be. Of course there is something to the art of writing well. How long should you write your articles? It all is based on what works with your target audience. You will need to properly gauge the extent of the useful content you choose to provide. One common tactic is to give enough to make them very curious and click through to find out more. As you know, giving them enough but not too much is the order of the day.

Developing some kind of relationship with your readers with your articles is possible, even if it will not be a very strong one. You can borrow something from copywriters, and that is to write just like you speak but within reason. When you write in such a manner, your readers will begin forming a positive impression about you. Making the reader have these feelings that you are talking directly to him or her is what makes this powerful. One important point to keep in mind is your demographic audience has to receive your style of writing in the right way. If you are writing informally, then just do it like you are speaking with your best friend.

What you have just read are highly effective article marketing suggestions, and we hope they will help you. But remember, the only way you can make this work is if you put it to work.

You know there are many methods available to use with online marketing, and mobile money blueprint is merely one of them but it should be seriously considered.

Martian Meteorite For Sale Is A 'Little Time Capsule'

While NASA's robot is taking photos of Martian rocks, there are several pieces of the real thing on Earth. In 2011, an extremely rare event happened in Morocco ? people observed a meteorite fall and recovered it before it was contaminated by water or organisms from Earth. Scientists now describe how it was made, and what it's made of. Now this weekend a piece of the asteroid is up for sale at a pricy auction house in Manhattan. Science and art have converged in a piece of Martian rock.

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

And now to one more rare thing that came from space: a meteorite. Some of the most unusual and prized meteorites fell to Earth from Mars. In a new journal article, scientists describe the latest one that was discovered, and this weekend, you can buy a piece of it. NPR's Christopher Joyce has this story of a journey from Mars to a Manhattan auction house.

CHRISTOPHER JOYCE, BYLINE: The meteorite is called Tissint, and it contains a unique story about Mars.

CAROLINE SMITH: Many people think that this meteorite may well be one of the most important meteorites that have actually fallen in the last century.

JOYCE: That's meteoriticist Caroline Smith at London's Museum of Natural History, which owns one of the biggest pieces of Tissint. She's one of the scientists who described it in the journal Science. Tissint's journey began as volcanic rock on the Martian surface. Smith says they can tell liquid washed over the rock and deposited bits of soil in it. Then an asteroid smacked into Mars and blasted the rock into space. In 2011, it flamed through the Earth's atmosphere and smashed into the Moroccan desert. Smith notes that while NASA's robot Curiosity is now driving around Mars, meteorite experts have the real thing.

SMITH: The thing is no matter how fantastic the robotic missions are, it's still not the same as being able to actually analyze a piece of rock in a laboratory on Earth. So the - I think the big message here is that the meteorite is almost ground-truthing what we're actually seeing on Mars.

JOYCE: Tissint is also special because the impact that blew it off Mars melted part of its surface into smooth, black glass. That trapped bubbles of Martian atmosphere and elements inside. Also, its fragments were found quickly, so it hasn't been too contaminated by elements on Earth. Scientists have just begun to tease out its story.

SMITH: Whenever I pick up a meteorite, I get excited. Each of those stones is a little time capsule and a little space probe to actually help us understand how our solar system formed.

JOYCE: But the piece in London is just one of many that broke off Tissint as it hurtled through Earth's atmosphere. Where they ended up is a story that begins in Morocco. Meteorite scientist Hasnaa Chennaoui Aoudjehane had heard about the fireball in the sky. Last January, she traveled 700 miles from Casablanca, over the Sahara, to find the strewn field where pieces were spread across the sand. She was not the first one there.

HASNAA CHENNAOUI AOUDJEHANE: The first thing that I see is hundreds of people in the middle of nowhere, and this is something that I will never forget.

JOYCE: Men, women and children were camped out, hunting for the pieces. Meteorites are often found in North Africa - unusual rocks stand out in the desert - and they bring a good price. She brought some small pieces for her university in Casablanca. Professional dealers scooped up the rest. About that time, a meteorite collector and dealer in New York City named Darryl Pitt got a tip about pieces of Mars for sale. Pitt got money from investors. A Moroccan dealer sold him a piece, dispatching his au pair to fly with it to New York City.

DARRYL PITT: Immediately after she clears customs, she reaches into her purse and gives me a packet, and I'm looking around, looking at the cameras and thinking, oh, my golly, this is going to be a problem.

JOYCE: Not that it was illegal, but the transaction made it look like it. Pitt bought or brokered the sale of more pieces, including the one that went to London's Natural History Museum.

PITT: It's important to make the material available to scientists and researchers first and foremost.

JOYCE: The museum's Caroline Smith agrees that collectors and scientists do help each other.

SMITH: I would be not telling the truth if I said there was no tension with anything where large amounts of money is involved, but I would like to stress that, you know, on the whole, relationships are very good. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement in many cases.

JOYCE: On Sunday, a piece of Tissint will be offered at a meteorite auction in Manhattan. Pitt helped Heritage Auctions arrange it. He says the Martian meteorites are the stars because there are so few. All told, on Earth...

PITT: You're talking about, like, about 300 pounds of material. That's it. Mars is among the rarest substances on Earth.

JOYCE: The Tissint fragment at the auction starts at $230,000. As for potential buyers...

PITT: Most anyone who has an appreciation for the exotic, the romantic, anyone who wants to enthrall a child or anyone's sense of wonder. Radio hosts?

(LAUGHTER)

PITT: Everyone.

(AP) ? Barbra Streisand was full of Brooklyn pride as she belted out well-known tunes with passion during a concert at the newly built Barclays Center.

Thursday night's three-hour show was Streisand's return to her hometown, where she's also performing Saturday on her "Back to Brooklyn" tour.

The 70-year-old told the crowd of 18,000 that the last time she performed solo in the New York City borough was "on somebody's stoop on Pulaski Street" as an 8-year-old.

She entered the stage in a shimmery black blazer and long skirt, holding her hands close to the microphone as she hit the right notes on more than two dozen songs, including "People," ''Evergreen" and "The Way We Were."

"Hello Brooklyn," she yelled. "Who said you can't come home again, right? Just Thomas Wolfe."

A video from "summer 1979" played on a large screen as people from Streisand's neighborhood talked about the singer, commenting on her talents, demeanor, family and even her nose.

"Purely a reflection of Brooklyn," one woman said. As the clip closed another woman said: "Come back to Brooklyn and give us a concert."

"It might have taken me 33 years, but I'm finally here," she said to the crowd.

"I left Brooklyn to pursue my dreams. Brooklyn quite never left me," she said at another time.

Streisand played with the audience, often telling jokes and taking in the many screams of "I love you, Barbra!"

The icon looked to the front row at a fan wearing one of her T-Shirts.

"You buy it in the shop? It's cheaper online," she said, as people laughed. She looked to another in the crowd: "You look like Dick Cheney. See this is what happens when I see the audience, it's not good."

The stage beamed with purple lights, as an orchestra of 30-plus played in a pit where small blue lights were strung around them.

Streisand performed sitting and standing, as a small table stood next to her where flowers and a mug with chicken soup were placed (she said she woke up with a cold).

Ahead of her performance fans submitted questions to Streisand, who answered several of them onstage. One asked if she was aware that contemporary singers lip sync.

"I've heard about that. I could never do it because I'm so bad at it. So I have to apologize because I have to sing live," she said as the audience roared.

That question was followed with: "I'd love to know what you think of Mitt Romney's promise to fire Big Bird."

"I love Big Bird and I hope no one tells Romney how to get to Sesame Street or Pennsylvania Avenue," she said as the crowd cheered even louder. "He's a good actor. He's a good actor. A chameleon.

That wasn't Streisand's only political moment. The Barack Obama supporter said she taped Thursday night's vice presidential debates and couldn't "wait to go home to watch."

"I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, but ... if you believe in affordable health care and women's rights ... if you want to move forward and not back, you know who to vote for," she said.

Streisand was joined onstage by trumpeter Chris Botti, Italian operatic trio Il Volo and her 45-year-old son Jason Gould, asking him before they sang a duet: "Do you need anything, like, a sweater? You need some chicken soup?"

He earned a standing ovation as his mother looked on, gasping "Oh my God."

She remembered late singer Donna Summer by performing their duet "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)." She also paid tribute to her late friend ? composer Marvin Hamlisch ? as she sang "The Way We Were," saying "this is for you" before giving a rousing rendition of the tune.

When she performed "You're the Top," Streisand changed the lyrics, namedropping fellow Brooklynite Jay-Z, who performed eight shows at the Barclays Center last week. She sang lyrics like: "You're a Brooklyn Net, on a private jet" and "it's an accent you can't drop."

Even Messier When Kids are Involved - Parenting & Family

Editor?s note: This article appeared originally on ElisabethCorcoran.blogspot.com on September 20, 2012. Used with permission.

Q:??My five-year-old daughter just called me from her dad?s crying?now I am crying?this is so, so hard. How do people get through it???

I so get this. ?Never in a million years did I think I would be dealing with this kind of thing. ?How you handle this will depend on your relationship with your ex-husband, the age of your children, and the severity of the damage going on. ?But here are some general ideas to try.

Listen. When your child calls you crying or comes home and gives you an earful, take note. ?I don?t believe for the most part that children make stuff up like this. ?And I believe as mothers, we are able to discern what?s true and what?s overblown. ?Don?t discount the tears or the pleas for help. ?God made you the mother for a reason.

Confront. If possible, try talking to your ex-spouse about the situation, parent to parent. ?In my case, that?s no longer a possibility, so it?s hard for me to speak to this one. ?But if you?re at an amicable place in your relationship with your children?s father, this is the place to start. ?Share your concerns. ?Ask him if he has ideas of how you two can help your children adjust better. ?Perhaps family counseling might be in order. ?Perhaps a small break from as-frequent visits if your child is really suffering each time she goes. ?Try to brainstorm together, reminding him and yourself that what you both should be focusing on is what is best for your child right now and long-term, not what we want.?

Get help for the kids. I have embraced the now-famous saying, ?It takes a village to raise a child.? ?I?ve had to. ?I no longer consider myself to be co-parenting. ?I am a single mother. ?I am parallel-parenting at best. ?And I need help. ?My son spends time with four men from our church who are showing him what it means to be a man who loves and pursues God. ?And my daughter needs other women too. ?She?s got a couple small group leaders and she meets with my mentor. ?Both of my children, especially as children of divorce, need other adults to pour into them and help them walk through this season, to help them see what it looks like to be emotionally and relationally healthy. ?This didn?t just happen though. ?I ask and I set things up and I thank and then I ask again. ?Even if I?m annoying, I?m going to do this for my kids.?

And if necessary, get legal help for the kids. All states are different, but if you believe visitation should be suspended for a time or indefinitely, check with your lawyer on what would be involved.?

Get support for yourself. More than anything else that has gone on in my marriage and its ending that has broken my heart or angered me ? and there has been so very much ? nothing has done my damage to my soul than seeing what has gone on with my children. ?Seriously, this mama bear is mad. ?I carry around a huge weight when it comes to my children?how to parent them through this now?and what might come of their futures. ?I talk with friends and I read as much as I can. ?This is the only issue that still makes me cry. ?Surround yourself and your children with healthy families, with other mothers you respect. ?Share your heart and your burden. ?Ask for advice. ?Ask for help.

Video: New interactive system detects touch and gestures on any surface

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

People can let their fingers - and hands - do the talking with a new touch-activated system that projects onto walls and other surfaces and allows users to interact with their environment and each other.

The system identifies the fingers of a person's hand while touching any plain surface. It also recognizes hand posture and gestures, revealing individual users by their unique traits.

"Imagine having giant iPads everywhere, on any wall in your house or office, every kitchen counter, without using expensive technology," said Niklas Elmqvist, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University. "You can use any surface, even a dumb physical surface like wood. You don't need to install expensive LED displays and touch-sensitive screens."

The new "extended multitouch" system allows more than one person to use a surface at the same time and also enables people to use both hands, distinguishing between the right and left hand.

Research indicates the system is 98 percent accurate in determining hand posture, which is critical to recognizing gestures and carrying out commands. The technology has many possible applications, said Karthik Ramani, Purdue's Donald W. Feddersen Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

"Basically, it might be used for any interior surface to interact virtually with a computer," he said. "You could use it for living environments, to turn appliances on, in a design studio to work on a concept or in a laboratory, where a student and instructor interact."

Findings are detailed in a research paper being presented this week during the Association for Computing Machinery Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (ACM UIST 2012) in Cambridge, Mass. The paper was written by doctoral students Sundar Murugappan and Vinayak, who uses only one name, Elmqvist and Ramani.

The system uses the Microsoft Kinect camera, which senses three-dimensional space.

"We project a computer screen on any surface, just a normal table covered with white paper," Ramani said. "The camera sees where your hands are, which fingers you are pressing on the surface, tracks hand gestures and recognizes whether there is more than one person working at the same time." The Kinect camera senses depth, making it possible to see how far each 3-D pixel is from the camera. The researchers married the camera with a new computer model for the hand.

"So we can isolate different parts of a hand or finger to show how far they are from the surface," Elmqvist said. "We can see which fingers are touching the surface. With this technology, you could potentially call up a menu by positioning your hand just above the surface." That camera coupled with the hand model allows the system to locate the center of each hand, which is necessary for determining gestures and distinguishing between left and right hands.

Researchers explored possible applications, including one that allows the user to draw a sketch with a pen and then modify it with their hands.

"We can detect gestural interactions between more than one hand and more than one user," Ramani said. "You could do precision things, like writing with a pen, with your dominant hand and more general things, such as selecting colors, using the non-dominant hand."

Researchers tested the concept in two user studies, one with 14 volunteers and the other with nine. Findings from one study indicated display features should be no smaller than 18 millimeters, or about an inch, to be efficient.

"While new and more precise cameras will improve accuracy, we have established the necessary hand models and principles for the system," Ramani said.

The other user study showed the system can effectively determine hand posture and whether the right or left hand is being used.

"We wanted to see how accurate we could be while figuring out different configurations, such as touching with all 10 fingers, which hand is being used and so on," Elmqvist said.

That study indicated the system was 98 percent accurate in determining hand posture.

Patents are pending on the concept.

Iraq officially retreats from ambitious oil plans

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq officially stepped back on Wednesday from its ambitious plans to more than triple its oil production by 2017, but it remains more optimistic than the world's leading global energy monitor about how fast and how high it can boost output.

Baghdad's latest targets show that Iraq, which is now pumping some 3.4 million barrels a day, is eager to be a major player on the world energy map despite decades of wars and sanctions. It recently nudged out Iran as OPEC's second-largest producer, and further production gains would solidify its place behind the bloc's top producer, Saudi Arabia.

Speaking at a ceremony in Baghdad to mark the release of the International Energy Agency's less rosy outlook for Iraq's energy sector, Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister on energy Hussain al-Shahristani predicted that the country's oil production will reach 5 million to 6 million barrels per day in 2015. He envisions that rising to 9 million to 10 million barrels per day by 2020, a level that could be sustained for 20 years.

Iraq had previously been targeting production capacity of 12 million barrels per day by 2017. Many experts consider that target unrealistic.

"The conclusion of our studies and those of the independent consultants engaged in the Ministry of Oil are that it is feasible and desirable for Iraq to raise its oil production to about 9 to 10 million barrels per day by 2020," al-Shahristani added, without giving reasons for adjusting the oil targets.

The Paris-based IEA issued Tuesday a mid-range forecast envisioning oil production of 6.1 million barrels a day by 2020 and 8.3 million barrels a day by 2035.

Encouraged by improvement in the security situation, Iraq started in 2008 to attract international oil companies to develop its vast untapped oil and gas reserves to bring in sorely needed cash for postwar reconstruction. Top among major oil companies are the U.S.'s Exxon Mobil, Anglo-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, the U.K.'s BP, China's CNPC and Russia's Lukoil.

Since then, Iraq has awarded 12 oil deals to develop about 65 percent of its 143.1 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. Three other deals to develop major gas fields were also awarded. As a result, Iraq's daily production and exports have jumped to levels not seen since the late 1970s or early 1980s.

It is now producing 3.4 million barrels a day, up from nearly 2.4 million a day in 2009, and its daily exports averaged 2.6 million barrels a day last month. Oil revenues make up nearly 95 percent of the budget.

But the IEA said Iraq needed to sort out internal issues in order for its predictions to come true. Among the most troublesome is the lack of oil-related infrastructure like pipeline networks, storages and export terminals. Another is the dispute between Iraq's central government and the self-ruled northern Kurdish region over rights to develop natural resources.

The IEA report also noted that boosting Iraq's oil production is crucial for international markets, as Iraq is expected to account for nearly half of the expected growth in global oil output in the current decade. A more pessimistic IEA forecast in the same report sees Iraqi oil output rising to just 4 million barrels a day in 2020 and to 5.3 million barrels in 2035. In its high case, IEA says that oil production could reach 9.2 million barrels in 2020.

The monitor reported that Iraq's annual revenues from energy exports could double to an average of $200 billion annually over the next 20 years. That optimistic scenario would make Iraq's economy the same size as that of Saudi Arabia now by 2035.

The IEA is a policy adviser to 28 member countries, mostly industrialized oil consumers. The group's predictions are important because they are seen as key benchmarks for energy markets.

England World Cup wins and losses linked to 30 percent rise in domestic violence, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Domestic violence rates rose by an average of 30 percent each time England won or lost their games during the 2010 World Cup, but draws had little impact on the statistics.

Those are the key findings of research carried out by statistician Professor Allan Brimicombe and BBC News journalist Rebecca Cafe and published in the October issue of Significance, the magazine of The Royal Statistical Society and the American Statistical Association.

As a consequence of this and previous research, Professor Brimicombe believes there is a strong case for schools to educate pupils of the dangers of domestic violence, event organisers should promote initiatives that tackle domestic violence and that police forces should prepare themselves for peaks in domestic violence around major sporting events.

"Domestic violence is widespread, accounting for 15 percent of all violent crimes and 35 percent of murders in the UK," explains Professor Brimicombe, from the Centre for Geo-Information Studies at the University of East London.

"It is a crime that is estimated to affect some 30 percent of women and 17 percent of men at some point in their lives."

The researchers based their findings on statistics provided by 33 of the 39 police forces in England, which between them cover 77 percent of the country's population.

The data, for the period covering the 2010 World Cup and the same period in 2009, was obtained under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, which enables members of the public to request official information from public bodies.

The figures showed that when England drew 1-1 against the USA, domestic violence fell by 1.9 percent and when England drew 0-0 against Algeria it rose by 0.1 percent.

However when England won its game against Slovenia 1-0, domestic violence rose by 27.7 percent. And England's exit from the World Cup, after losing 4-1 to Germany, was accompanied by a 31.5 percent rise in domestic violence.

The research aimed to test the validity of an analysis carried out by the Home Office that showed that domestic violence had risen during the 2006 World Cup. "Major sporting events do not cause domestic violence, as perpetrators are responsible for their actions," said the analysis, "but the levels of alcohol consumption linked to the highly charged emotional nature of those events seems to increase the prevalence of such incidents."

Professor Brimicombe concludes that the Home Office findings were right in some respects but fell short in their analysis in other respects.

Professor Brimicombe explains: "Our research shows that increased levels of domestic violence are associated with national football matches, but only if there is a definite win or lose result. The failing of the earlier Home Office analysis was that it ignored the outcome of the match, which as we have seen is crucial.

"The percentage differences that we found are so great that we believe we have established a strong case for linking wins and losses, but not draws, to increased domestic violence.

"I hope that the findings will encourage improved education around the links between major sporting events and peaks in domestic violence and greater awareness of the risk.

"And I would applaud initiatives like the recent beer mat campaign highlighting the dangers of domestic violence, run by the London Borough of Newham and Metropolitan Police during the 2012 Olympics."

Dating my boss - Relationships, Dating, & Marriage

Q: Dear Meredith,

I?m a married man and recently separated. I was in a long-term marriage that should have ended some 11 years ago. I?ve made peace with the end of that relationship and am working on being happy while being alone.

I made a decision that it would take me three years to work though my marriage ending before I was ready for anyone else. I also decided that I was NOT interested in anyone with children ? been there, done that.

Recently I joined a support group as a way to help process some of the loneliness. At the first meeting, something wonderful and completely unexpected happened. A woman approached me and was very interested in talking. I was flattered by her attention and found her to be a very open and genuine person. That night after the support group, we went off to karaoke and the friendship I was NOT looking for instantly blossomed.

Things have been wonderful for the three short weeks we?ve been together. We?ve seen each other frequently, have shared a lot about our lives and relationships, and our friendship seemed to be going great. We made plans for an official first date, and I had some great things planned, wanting to create a special night of fun and the foundation to what I was hoping would be a lasting friendship. My friend is a separated woman with three children.

We never had that date; she cancelled and has pulled away. I?ve been downgraded to maybe not even a friend although she?s told me that I am. My involvement with her may have been a distraction to her bad breakup after falling in love with the wrong guy. She has openly shared the details of that bad situation with me, for which I am grateful.

So here?s my dilemma: She?s awakened feelings that I tried so hard to bury. I am smitten, can?t deny it, won?t hide it, dismiss it, or make small of it. I do know that I am not in love with her, but over time I see that could happen. She has changed my world completely. I think about her a lot ? about our talks, how we kissed and hugged so passionately.

I am an emotionally available man, sensitive, honest, trustworthy, and dependable. It may sound egotistical and I?ll accept that, but I can rock her world in time if given a chance. I am not the guy who caused her so much emotional pain (I want to take it away and make it all better), not her former husband, but a guy who?s different.

I need advice on how I can save this friendship. I do not want to lose her because in her mind I?m associated with the man who broke her heart. I KNOW she has feelings for me but may be afraid to get hurt again. I get that completely.

Thank you for reading this and for any/all helpful suggestions and advice.

? Smitten, Cambridge

A: All you can do is tell her how you feel. If she doesn?t want her world rocked, you must refrain from rocking it. You have to respect her boundaries.

Just make sure that you?re honest with her (and yourself) about what you want. I mean, if she doesn?t want to date you, do you really want to save the friendship? You?re smitten and you want to hug and kiss. I?m not convinced that you have any interest in keeping her around as a platonic pal.

You?ve learned so much from her in just a few short weeks. She taught you that you?re ready to date and that you?re open to being with someone who has kids. She taught you that your stomach still produces butterflies. She?s just a sign that there?s more.

There are plenty of fantastic women out there who genuinely want their world rocked. Find them. And find a great therapist to supplement that support group.

Readers? What?s up with this woman and her mixed signals? What can the letter writer do to keep her around? Should he keep her around? Should he care this much after just a few weeks? Discuss.

? Meredith

RockMelt social browser comes to the iPad, offers up news stories tailored to your interests

Remember RockMelt The "social web browser"? The name doesn't come up often, especially when we talk about conventional browsers like Firefox, Chrome, IE and Safari. Well, rest assured, the startup is still alive and kicking: after releasing an iPhone app earlier this year, it's introducing an iPad version as well. As ever, the browser is built around social networks like Facebook and Twitter, but instead of emphasizing chat and status updates, it's all about using your social network to help curate a newsfeed that matches your interests. In other words, you could do a traditional web search and sift though the results, but if you sign in with your Facebook or Twitter handle what you'll actually see are stories that RockMelt thinks might appeal to you. In theory, the browser will learn, over time, what you like and what you don't, and at any point you can add specific news sources as you would with an RSS feed. As an added bonus, the experience of reading articles from within the app is actually quite smooth, but that's neither here nor there.

And, of course, what would a social browser be without the ability to share cat videos? In addition to sharing things with people directly (i.e., through email), you can use so-called emoticodes like "lol," "want," and "aww" to comment on a story without actually commenting on it. (Think of it as the equivalent of liking something on Facebook: it's less intrusive than posting random links on your friend's wall.) The app is available for download today, and we're told versions for other platforms are in development. In the meantime, check out the screenshots after the break to get a basic for the layout.

1991 wedding guest list made VP debate side issue

(AP) ? The day before the vice presidential debate the guest list for moderator Martha Raddatz's 1991 wedding has become an issue, of sorts.

The list included Harvard Law School student and future president Barack Obama. The groom was Julius Genachowski, the current Federal Communications Commission chairman. And The Daily Caller website wanted to know if the connections 21 years ago raise the question of bias going into Thursday's debate.

Raddatz's employer, ABC News, called the issue "silly" and sought to beat the website to the punch by confirming that Obama attended the wedding 21 years ago. The couple divorced in 1997.

Raddatz, ABC's senior foreign affairs correspondent, was chosen this summer by the Commission on Presidential Debates to moderate the debate between Democratic Vice President Joe Biden and Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan. She has been with ABC News for more than 13 years and wrote "The Long Road Home ? A Story of War and Family."

In the early 1990s, Raddatz was a reporter for ABC's local station in Boston. Law school student Genachowski worked at the Harvard Law Review, where Obama was president, and the couple invited much of the review's staff to their wedding, ABC said. The guest list also included Bradford Berenson, a future counsel in George W. Bush's administration.

The Daily Caller wrote in August about the marriage, under the headline "Marital, personal ties link Obama administration to Commission on Presidential Debates." A reporter from The Daily Caller on Monday asked ABC for confirmation that Obama was at the wedding.

The next day, before The Daily Caller wrote another story, ABC News sent a statement to the Huffington Post, Politico and The Daily Beast saying Obama had been at the wedding. ABC News spokesman Jeffrey Schneider said he was concerned the website was "trying to assassinate Martha's character."

"Instead of dealing with some silly story three hours before the debate, we wanted to deal with some silly story two days before the debate," Schneider said.

The news went through the partisan ringer. The Huffington Post headlined a short piece on the issue: "ABC News pushes back at Daily Caller for Martha Raddatz bias accusation." The Daily Caller's story on Wednesday had the headline: "ABC News scrambles to downplay Obama's attendance at VP debate moderator's wedding."

The story led the Drudge Report website on Wednesday afternoon.

Robert Steele, a professor at DePauw University and expert in media ethics, said he believes the issue is a "red herring" and distraction from important topics to be brought up in the vice presidential debate. In short, Steele said, he didn't see any issue.

He compared the circumstances to a reporter in Washington having lunch or playing golf with someone who later goes on to a top political position. It would be different if Raddatz were still married to Genechowski, Steele said, noting that Raddatz did some speaking engagements at the Poynter Institute when Steele worked there.

"I don't see any substance to the argument that there is a conflict of interest," he said.

But Steele said that Raddatz should have made Obama's wedding attendance known to the debate commission before she was selected to moderate the debate.

The commission did not know about the wedding connection ahead of time but, even if it had, it would not have made a difference in Raddatz's selection, commission Executive Director Janet Brown said.

An email and phone call to The Daily Caller and its founder, Tucker Carlson, were not immediately returned.

Qatar Airways flight lands safely after emergency

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? A Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Lagos landed safely after declaring an emergency over a problem with its landing gear, said an emergency response official.

The Airbus A330 aircraft landed safely just after 1 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) with no injuries, said Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the emergency management director for Lagos state.

Harold Demuren, director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, told The Associated Press that the flight Saturday declared an emergency prior to its arrival to Lagos. Demuren said firefighting equipment and personnel stood by for its arrival at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Officials with Qatar Airways could not be immediately reached for comment.
