Surgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic CultureSurgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic CultureThe ease of accessibility, improvements in safety and technology, media attention, growing acceptance by the public, or an increasingly superficial culture: whatever the reason, cosmetic surgery is more popular today than ever. In 2005, in the United States alone, there were nearly two million aesthetic operations-more than quadruple the number from 1984, along with more than eight million non-surgical procedures. Innovative surgical methods have also brought cosmetic improvements to new areas of the body, such as the ribs, buttocks, and genitalia.

Despite the increasing normalization of cosmetic surgery, however, there are still those who identify individuals who opt for bodily modifications as dupes of beauty culture, as being in conflict with feminist ideals, or as having some form of psychological weakness. In this ground-breaking book, Victoria Pitts-Taylor examines why we consider some cosmetic surgeries to be acceptable or even beneficial and others to be unacceptable and possibly harmful. Similarly, why are some patients considered to be psychologically healthy while others deemed pathological? When is the modification of our appearance empowering and when is it a sign of weakness?

Drawing on years of research, her personal experience with cosmetic surgery, analysis of newspaper articles and television shows, and in-depth interviews with surgeons, psychiatrists, lawyers, judges, and others, Pitts-Taylor brings new perspectives to the promotion of "extreme" makeovers on television, the medicalization of "surgery addiction," the moral and political interrogation that many patients face, and feminist debates on the topic.

While many feel that cosmetic surgery is a deeply personal choice and that its pathology is rooted in the individual psyche, Pitts-Taylor makes a compelling argument that the experience, meanings, and motivations for cosmetic surgery are highly social. A much needed "makeover" of our cultural understanding of cosmetic surgery, this book is both authoritative and thoroughly engaging.

Apple iPhone '5S' or '6' Rumors: 5 New Features You're Likely To See On Its Release Date In 2013

Apple reportedly has three different phones in development, but people ultimately want to know about the true successor to the iPhone 5. What could Apple's next-generation high-end smartphone look like, feel like or do?

In just the first month of 2013, we've heard dozens of varying reports about this next-gen iPhone -- unofficially labeled as "iPhone 5S," or "iPhone 6" -- speculating on its various features, and how it could truly differentiate itself from all previous iPhones.

We've rounded up some of the most likely iPhone 5S or 6 features, and while everything on this list must be deemed a "rumor" -- Apple refuses to comment on speculation about its future products -- many of the features on this list do have backing from analysts with excellent track records and sources from within Apple's supply chain.

Without further ado, here's what we've heard:

1. Improved Rear Camera: Last week, iLounge editor-in-chief Jeremy Horwitz released a series of reports on the next-gen iPhone, which he calls "iPhone 5S." In addition to a processor bump (an all-new A7 system-on-a-chip), Horwitz believes the next iPhone will feature a better camera system.

?The iPhone 5S is still months away from mass production, but our source suspects that the star feature will be an upgraded rear camera -- perhaps featuring Sony?s 13-Megapixel sensor, plus the aforementioned flash upgrade,? Horwitz said. ?Current prototypes are codenamed N51 and N53, with July mentioned as the target date.?

Giving credence to these rumors, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo -- one of the best at the business at predicting Apple?s product pipeline -- also believes the iPhone 5S or 6 will feature a new-and-improved camera system, including f2.0 aperture on the rear side and a "smart LED flash" for enhanced photo-taking.

2. Fingerprint Sensor: While a sharper camera is all fine and dandy, one particularly strong rumor we've heard is that the iPhone 5S or 6 will finally show some love for the home button, which is said to include an?integrated fingerprint sensor?to replace the need for usernames and passwords on the phone.

A fingerprint sensor makes great logical sense to be an iPhone 6 feature: Unlike other rival smartphones with multiple buttons the bottom, the iPhone has only one mechanical button on its face, which makes it exceedingly easy and intuitive for users to find and use this feature. Furthermore, given Apple?s urgency to acquire Florida-based AuthenTec last July (as noted in the?company?s own filing?to the SEC), there?s an excellent chance that we?ll see this unique feature in the iPhone 5S or 6 when it releases later this year.

3. The Photographer's Timer: Traditionally, self-timing cameras are used to take pictures of a big group, or a self-portrait. But in Apple's self-timer, a patent?granted March 8, the iDevice's camera can identify the photographer and ask if they want to be in the picture. At that point, the iPhone will simply wait until it detects the photographer's face in the viewfinder before it automatically snaps a photo. If you are the "photographer" who also wants to be in the picture, the iPhone will simply wait until it detects your face to take the picture.

"But what about interruptions? What happens if I get a call after I set the self-timer?" Wonder no more. If you set the timer and then your phone goes off, the timer will still wait until it has detected, recognized and verified that you are the photographer and that you're in place for the photo.

If anyone can pull off this kind of intelligent face recognition in photo-taking, it's Apple: the company purchased Polar Rose, a Swedish software firm that specializes in facial recognition, back in September 2010.

4. 3D Photography: As more and more people are relying on their smartphone as their camera, Apple might be the first major phone maker to release a phone that can take 3D photographs.

While existing 3D cameras and video recorders gather three-dimensional information from objects, they're generally incapable of getting detailed enough information in relation to the shapes, surfaces and depth of the objects.?Apple's patented solution?involves a series of systems, tools and methods to capture a 3D image by using multiple sensors and cameras. One sensor would capture a polarizing image, while two other sensors would capture two different non-polarizing images, and Apple's system would combine the images into a composite. If Apple is putting a great deal of focus into the camera, it's possible Apple might throw in a couple of extra sensors on the rear side to pull off unique three-dimensional photographs.

5. IGZO Display: Apple has reportedly invested a great deal of time, energy and money into display technology, likely to be used for its next-gen iPad and iPhone, including this year's iPhone 5S or 6.

A?Jan. 3 report?released by the China Times said Apple might switch to a "Touch On Display" panel currently in development at Taiwan-based Innolux Corp., which has?reportedly been licensed?to use Sharp's proprietary IGZO display technology.

Whether or not Apple chooses Innolux to make the next iPhone's screens, however, Apple is most likely going to feature Sharp's ultra-thin IGZO display technology in its next iPhone.

In late December,?DigiTimes?and Apple analyst?Horace Dediu?both mentioned Apple?s alleged investment in the ultra-thin IGZO displays produced by Sharp, predicting the inclusion of the technology in Apple?s next batch of iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads. Dediu also pointed to Apple?s recent $2.3 billion investment in ?product tooling, manufacturing process equipment and infrastructure,? believing the cash was used to help bail out Sharp, which had been in financial straits in 2012. Sharp is reportedly going ?all in? on IGZO technology, so it?s possible Apple saved Sharp to leverage its investment in the next generation of displays.

IGZO display technology is not only thin and tough, but it can even handle higher screen densities than Apple?s Retina display, which is visually stunning on its own. IGZO displays can reportedly handle display densities north of 330 ppi; for a quick comparison, the new iPad 4 can only achieve 264 ppi.

One of the advantages of IGZO display technology is its lower power consumption. Most Apple products, from the iPhone 5 to the iPad 4, require cartoonishly big batteries to achieve just eight hours of power -- this is because current-gen Retina displays are extremely power hungry. If Apple wanted its iPhone 6 to not only last longer during the day but also charge faster when plugged in, IGZO seems to be the way to go for the next generation of iOS devices.

What features do you think Apple should include in the iPhone 5S or 6? Let us know in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Today?s home belongs to Mexico-born, Sydney based interior designer Lorena Gaxiola and family. Despite Lorena?s impressive design credentials (outlined below!), she hasn?t tinkered too much with the general layout of the space since purchasing her home six years ago. Though the basic structure of the home remains unchanged, cosmetic changes have included replacing floorboards, changing interior paint colours and some joinery, and also reworking the central courtyard area.

Lorena has a love of bold colour, and a passion for artwork collected on travels through the US and her native Mexico. ?One of her favourite vignettes is the entrance hall, where an artwork by her friend, Mexican artist Jorge Tellaeche, is paired with an eyecatching graphic cabinet by Australian furniture maker Old School Industries. ?The composition is me to a tee!? Lorena says.

Whist I must admit it?s not entirely clear in these shots, Lorena?s home is built around a central courtyard ? from the entrance through to the living space, each room opens onto a generous outdoor room. ?I love how we can open the hallway, den areas and TV room opens into the courtyard creating an indoor/outdoor feel? says Lorena. ?It is an amazing party home!?.

Born and raised in Mexico, Lorena?s father, a respected architect, inspired her to follow in his footsteps in the field of design. As a result, Lorena co-founded her interior design firm, Kuatro Design, in the US in 2000, and became the sole director of the company in 2003. After many years spent running her company from the US, and winning a string of international awards, Lorena moved to Australia six years ago, and had her first child ??Demi Luiza (pictured below ? so cute!), in Sydney last year. ?She now officially calls Australia home.

Though she?s a new Mum, Lorena still plays a very hands on role in running her design business, with high profile clients the US, Asia and Australia. At present, Lorena is also busy adding another string to her bow! Combining her Mexican heritage and international design experience, she is currently working with a small team of Sydney designers to ?develop her own collection of homewares, to be released later this year under her own name. We got a sneak peek at the ceramics and glassware whilst we photographed her home and they are seriously SO AMAZING! Lorena?s range will include textiles, wallpaper, rugs, dinnerware and glassware. I wish very much I could share a preview with you here but alas they?re not quite ready for coverage yet. I?ll be sure to keep you posted ? think Mexicana meets Missoni?.!

Massive thanks to Lorena and Demi for having us, and sharing their home with us today!

Ethics of talking shit about bad people and companies - ShoeMoney ...

If you have read my autobiography I give a ton of examples how I do what others are willing not to do.

I also talk about how I feel its my duty to share my experiences with companies that I feel are evil. ?Sometimes even criminal.

I call them out by name. ?You can see peoples names on the bottom right. ?As you read them you will notice that I don?t tell you if you should do business with them or not I simply share my experience with them.

Let me give you an example.

Rohail recently made a post titled How I lost 15,000 in a week. ? Its a post about how he got conned into working with this shitty company who managed a campaign for him and lost him a bunch of money. ?We have all been there so no shame in that. ?I was disappointed that Rohail did not give them name in the company.

So now at the next Affiliate Summit when I (or others) talk to Rohail about an experience I had where a company cost me a lot of money. ?Then he reveals that it was this company that he wrote about. ?How shitty is he going to feel that if he would have shared his experience he could have saved a lot of his friends money?

I can?t tell you the amount of people that have thanked me for sharing my experiences with companies.

I understand some people think its bad karma to do so or the possible legal ramifications are just not worth it. ?And I am not going to lie I have had legal ramifications. ?But since everything I wrote was 100% fact then not much they can do. ?And the LAST thing one of these companies want (IMO) is to have public documents stating all of these facts.

Anyway again I don?t mean to pick on Rohail. ?He is a good guy. Its just the latest example I came across.

How is Coke Fighting Obesity? | Care2 Healthy Living

If you were to informally poll reasonably informed Americans about what exactly were the causes of the lasting obesity epidemic in this country, more pointedly, who in the world of corporate foods was to blame, the list would probably be something like McDonald?s, Hostess, and probably Coca-Cola.

The logic around this has to do with something to do with the fact that these companies (and there are many others guilty of the same thing) peddle all sorts of calorie-dense, nutritionally-vacant, goods that American love just a bit too much. These products are leaving people fat, unhealthy and riddled with health problems including obesity. While McDonald?s is holding on to its bit of fast food market share, and Hostess is being dissolved like a Twinkie in a nuclear holocaust, Coca-Cola is doing what it can to mitigate the PR disaster that is our nation?s current obsession with health and obesity.

The way the Coca-Cola Company is addressing this is with a persuasive new public service advertisement that positions the company as fighting alongside concerned Americans as a sort of brother-in-arms. With this new ad, the company offers up the idea that it is providing ?solutions? to the current obesity epidemic with their diet drink portfolio, charitable contributions to fitness programs and by insisting that if you take in more calories than you burn, you will gain weight.

They attempt to equal the caloric playing field with this statement, ?All calories count. No matter where they come from, including Coca-Cola and everything else with calories.? This statement implies that a fistful of almonds or celery is just as good as a 12-ounce can of Coke, as long as you exert the energy to burn off the calories consumed. (See the advertisement above.)

The one of many problems with this corporate logic is the convenient glossing over of what constitutes a nutrient-rich calorie, and what is just an empty calorie. To be sure, a serving of Coke is the definition of empty calories.

Sure there are other problems with this sort of feel-good, ?we are all on the same team? propaganda, and I am willing to give the Coca-Cola Company some credit for not wholly ignoring the issue, but aren?t they just really serving their own interests on this one? Couldn?t they do more to clean up their product line, offer some real nutrition, and promote healthy living outside of their corporate interests? What are your thoughts on this new campaign?

Iran and the US need a middleman ? or two

This week, Iran sparked international concern again after it announced a successful launch of a monkey into space ? a testament to the progress of its missile systems ? and deflected reports of an explosion at its Fordrow nuclear facility. As Iran and the international community try to agree on a date and prepare for a new round of negotiations over Iran?s nuclear program, it is time to reflect on the lessons learned from previous failed talks.

Following the model of the Turkey-Brazil proposal considered in mid-2010, negotiators should once again turn to ?middlemen? countries that can help fashion a deal that satisfies both Western and Iranian concerns. Turkey and Japan are perfectly positioned as trusted intermediaries to build a credible proposal that has a better chance of standing up to the scrutiny of Washington and Tehran than anything likely to be produced by the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany).

Only with intermediaries that are perceived as honest brokers by both sides can the Iranian nuclear negotiations break out of what has become a zero-sum game.

OPINION: 3 views on what the US should do about Iran's nuclear program

There have been near misses in international efforts to strike a deal with Iran, but none came closer than the Turkey-Brazil proposal to resolving the fundamental demands of both the United States and Iran. At heart, Western powers want to ensure that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities, while Tehran wants to ensure it preserves its ?right? to develop a peaceful nuclear program.

Based on an American proposal from the previous year, the 2010 Turkey-Brazil proposal would have allowed Iran to send large quantities of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be refined to medical reactor-grade purity, for the production of medical isotopes but not the development of a nuclear weapon.

It was a good idea in principle, and was too easily dismissed by the P5+1 negotiators when it was brought back to the table by a joint effort by Turkey and Brazil. One of the key reasons the Americans mentioned for rejecting the deal was that numbers for the amount of enriched uranium to be transferred out that were discussed in 2009 were already obsolete by 2010, as Iran had continued enriching uranium over the course of the negotiations.

As negotiators approach talks this time around, the specifics of an updated proposal along the lines of the Turkey-Brazil deal would have to be reworked, but the original approach was sound, and it is worth another try.

Nuclear negotiations with Iran have been consistently undermined by the adversarial relationship between Iran and the West. Decades of mutual distrust have made it nearly impossible to broker an agreement. The Turkey-Brazil negotiation circumvented this tension, and Turkish and Brazilian diplomats leveraged their warm relations with Iran, the United States, and European countries and their own status as rising powers in the international community to present themselves as honest brokers.

The need for credible intermediaries has not abated in the past year and a half. In fact, if there is any hope that a deal can still be reached, the chances of success will be best if both Iran and the P5+1 can work with intermediary countries that are trusted on both sides.

Turkey remains well placed to facilitate a new agreement ? it is Iran?s bridge to Europe and the West. Ankara has been eager to assert itself in the global arena and has a vested interest in the Iranian nuclear negotiations succeeding. Turkish officials would like to avoid a regional conflagration that would disrupt trade and could spill over into neighboring countries, and they would also like to avoid an Iranian bomb that could shift the balance of power in the Middle East. Threading that needle would be a diplomatic coup for Turkey. This mediation process could also help bring Iran and Turkey closer to overcome recent tensions over the Syrian crisis.

OPINION: 5 ways US must promote nuclear nonproliferation

Although Turkey could go it alone or work with a multitude of other partners, it should consider joining forces with Japan in making a new offer to the parties. A longtime consumer of Iranian oil exports, Japan has maintained strong diplomatic relations with Iran since the Islamic Revolution. Despite its vocal criticism of Iran?s opaque nuclear program, and particularly Iran?s refusal of international inspections, Japan was a strong supporter of the Turkey-Brazil deal.

Although Japan?s civilian nuclear program has been more of a cautionary tale since the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster, the country has impeccable nonproliferation credentials. In fact, many Iranian politicians recognize Japan as a model of what a strong civilian nuclear program could be. But perhaps most important, substituting Japan for Brazil as a partner with Turkey could also bring into play an intermediary with stronger ties and deeper reserves of trust in Washington.

Within the adversarial context of US-Iran negotiations, neither country perceives itself as winning unless the other is seen as losing. This has tied negotiators? hands in the past and unnecessarily stymied diplomatic efforts.

Iran?s nuclear program is a source of national pride, and Iranian officials know better than to make any concessions that could be framed as giving in to the West ? a perception that would undermine their credibility domestically as well as their tactical position abroad. Concerns about appearing soft on Iran have prevented US officials from making concessions as well, and American policy has often tended to be purely punitive without sufficient consideration for whether punishment is likely to affect Iran?s conduct.

If rising powers can negotiate a new agreement, American and Iranian officials will have to decide whether they can take ?yes? for an answer. Without finding a way to circumvent the adversarial tenor of the current negotiations, though, there will be no win-win proposals, and therefore no deal.

The foundations of a Turkey-Japan negotiation with Iran have been laid in decades of dialogue with Tehran and long-established relations focused on energy supplies. Most important, Turkey and Japan continue to maintain strong trade relations with Tehran, which allows them to include economic incentives in a potential proposal. The P5+1 cannot offer such incentives unless they lift a number of sanctions, which seems highly unlikely at the first stage.

A Turkey-Japan proposal would allow the US and Iran to save face and make concessions while decreasing the domestic risks of appearing weak and giving in to the pressures of rivals.

OPINION: 4 ways US and Iran can make nuclear talks work

While it is unlikely that a grand bargain is on the horizon, it is past time for some constructive, measured steps. Changing the players in the next round of negotiations by bringing in countries that both Iran and the United States trust is a smart step that could produce a win-win for everyone.

(AP) ? North Korea appears all set to detonate an atomic device, but confirming the explosion when it takes place will be virtually impossible for outsiders, specialists said Tuesday.

The best indication of a test will be seismic tremors and abnormal radiation in the air, but even that can be masked if North Korea wants to. In all likelihood the first word of the test will come from Pyongyang itself, just as it happened when the country conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

Last week, North Korea warned that it plans a third nuclear test to protest toughened international sanctions meant to punish it for firing a long-range rocket in December. The world sees the launch as a ballistic missile test banned by the U.N., while Pyongyang says it only launched a satellite into orbit as part of a peaceful space development program.

The U.S., South Korea and their allies have pressed the North to scrap its nuclear test plans, saying it will only worsen the country's decades-old international isolation.

The threats have placed scientists and experts in South Korea on high alert as any test is likely to aggravate the already high tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said Tuesday it believes North Korea has nearly completed its nuclear test preparations, confirming satellite analysis last week by the U.S.-Korea Institute, a research group at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Its satellite images of the Punggye-ri site ? where the previous two nuclear tests were conducted ? show that the North Koreans may have been sealing a tunnel into a mountainside where a nuclear device would be detonated.

In the event of such an underground nuclear test, earthquake monitoring stations in South Korea can detect seismic tremors accompanied by low-frequency sound waves. While earthquakes trigger seismic waves they don't produce sound waves.

But this is at best a strong indication of a test and not an absolute confirmation.

An earthquake expert at the state-run Korea Meteorological Administration said his office aims to find out the magnitude of the tremor, the time it started and the exact location on the map within 10 minutes of the explosion. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.

Experts also note that artificial earthquakes, such as those created by nuclear explosions, rarely trigger the same wave patterns as natural quakes.

North Korea could also try to deceive and give the impression that it exploded a nuclear device by simply exploding sophisticated conventional weapons that would trigger the same seismic waves produced by a nuclear test, said Chi Heoncheol, an earthquake specialist at the government-funded Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources.

By raising tensions this way, North Korea may hope to wrest concessions or aid in return for promises to scale back its unproven nuclear capability.

"Even if they bring truckloads of high-powered conventional explosives, put them (into an underground tunnel) and explode them, they will generate the same seismic wave and sound wave," Chi said. The only difference is no radioactivity would be detected from the explosion of conventional weapons, he said.

The best course for scientists would be to collect air samples to look for increased radiation but the process could take days. Even if the wind is favorable ? and assuming North Korea conducts the test at Punggye-ri in the country's northeastern corner ? it will take more than one day for airborne radioactive isotopes like xenon to reach South Korea, according to an official at the government-run Nuclear Safety and Security Commission.

The official, who requested anonymity citing the sensitive nature of the subject, acknowledged it may be impossible to confirm a test if the wind doesn't blow southward or if North Korea plugs the underground tunnel so tightly that no radioactive gas escapes.

South Korea confirmed increased radiation levels following the North's 2006 nuclear test but didn't find anything in 2009.

And if North Korea decides to conduct a so-called subcritical test, there would be no release of radioactivity at all.

A sub-critical test only works on the properties of plutonium but stop short of creating a critical mass, the point at which a self-sustaining nuclear reaction occurs. Such an experiment requires a "very difficult technology" that only a few countries like the U.S., Russia and England have acquired, said nuclear expert Whang Joo-ho of Kyung Hee University.

"I believe North Korea's technology has not reached that level," Whang said.

North Korea said its upcoming atomic explosion will be a "high-level" test and many analysts said that refers to a device made from highly enriched uranium, which gives the country a second source for manufacturing bombs in addition to plutonium.

Whether North Korea detonates a uranium- or plutonium-based device, there won't be much difference in how easily scientists can detect the tests. The only difference is that they produce different radioactive gases, Whang said.

He also said a uranium-based test explosion would mean that North Korea's nuclear stockpile can continue to be enlarged at a time when there is no evidence of continued production of plutonium at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex.

North Korea watchers in South Korea are speculating various dates for a possible nuclear test, with some predicting it could happen as early as this week and others choosing days just before the Feb. 16 birthday of late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

There is no way to determine when North Korea will conduct a nuclear test, said analyst Shim BeomChul at the state-run Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul. U.S. spy satellites "can detect objects 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) in size on the ground but they cannot detect what's happening underground," he said.

Audit Blasts Texas Cancer Agency Over Transparency ? CBS Dallas ...

AUSTIN (AP) ? A troubled $3 billion cancer-fighting agency in Texas under criminal investigation must address ?significant issues? with accountability and transparency, according to a critical state audit obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

Auditors found that the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas could not produce records surrounding several lucrative taxpayer-funded grants. They also said the agency?s former executive director recommended three projects for funding even though scientific peer review councils failed to endorse the projects. That trio of applicants wound up receiving more than $56 million combined, according to the State Auditor?s Office.

?By not ensuring that all grant applications are properly evaluated and documented, CPRIT weakens its ability to ensure that its award decisions best align with the agency?s mission,? the report said.

State auditors had not yet officially released the 100-page report before copies began to trickle out Monday. But the audit had been eagerly anticipated by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers who have lined up to blast the beleaguered agency in recent weeks and demand sweeping reforms.

The audit is the latest black eye for CPRIT, which has been in upheaval for much of the past year. The agency was a darling of the scientific community and some of the nation?s biggest advocacy groups after launching in 2009 as an unprecedented cancer-fighting effort on the state level. The agency oversees the nation?s second-largest pot of cancer research dollars, next to only the federal National Institutes of health.

That money is now frozen, as CPRIT is under a moratorium following revelations of improperly awarded grants that have drawn the attention of Texas prosecutors. The agency?s top three executives have all resigned in the past nine months.

Among the new revelations in Monday?s report was CPRIT failing to produce documentation from scientific peer reviewers in support of a $25 million statewide clinical trial network ? the largest single award in the agency?s history.

The Clinical Trials Network of Texas also did not receive matching funds from other investors as required, auditors said. The same was true of at the time the agency awarded $11 million to Dallas-based Peloton Therapeutics, which also never had its funding application independently reviewed.

CPRIT is also beset by appearances of conflicts of interest. Auditors found that former executive director Bill Gimson, former chief scientific officer Alfred Gilman and two members of the commercialization review council had ?business and professional relationships? with grant recipients.

CPRIT management generally agreed with the recommendations in this report, auditors said.

Nightclub inferno: Locked door trapped patrons?

A fire broke out early Sunday morning at a night club in Santa Maria, in southern Brazil, killing revelers ? many of them students. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff Writer, NBC News

Dozens of victims of a fast-moving nightclub inferno that claimed the lives of more than 230 people in southern Brazil were due to buried on Monday as reports emerged that fleeing patrons were blocked by a locked door.

About 50 funerals were expected to take place at the municipal cemetery in Santa Maria, according to Brazilian television news broadcast Zero Hora, while other bodies removed from the Kiss nightclub remained at the city?s gymnasium awaiting identification

The cemetery opened early, at 7.30 a.m. local time (4:30 a.m. ET), and was planning to conduct burials at half-hour intervals, O Globo reported, saying the army had helped dig graves.

The newspaper Diario de Santa Maria reported that a refrigerated truck was used to preserve some of the bodies overnight because local mortuary facilities were full.

The blaze began early Sunday when a band's small pyrotechnics show ignited foam sound-insulating material on the ceiling.

The first images from inside the blackened building show the extent of the panic, with drinks and clothing scattered across the floor.

Many of the victims were under 20 years old, The Associated Press reported, and were attending a party organized by students from several academic departments from the Federal University of Santa Maria.

'Barrier of bodies'
The main door of the nightclub was locked at the time, fire chief Guido Pedroso de Melo told O Globo.

He added that firefighters responding to the blaze initially had trouble getting inside the nightclub because "there was a barrier of bodies blocking the entrance.?

Local authorities told Reuters that 120 men and 113 women died in the fire, and 92 people are still being treated in hospitals.

Survivors and the police inspector Marcelo Arigony said security guards briefly tried to block people from exiting the club, according to the AP, perhaps fearing that patrons would leave without paying their tab.

Relatives gather at the city gymnasium in Santa Maria, Brazil, to mourn victims from the 'Kiss' nightclub fire.

But Arigony said the guards didn't appear to block fleeing patrons for long. "It was chaotic and it doesn't seem to have been done in bad faith because several security guards also died," he told the AP.

In a radio interview, the band?s guitarist Rodrigo Martins said the fire began shortly after the band took to the stage at 2.15 a.m. local time Sunday.

"When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn't working," he said, adding that the accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other members made it out safely.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

NYC apartment for $95M, with $60K in monthly fees

5 hrs.

As apartments go, it's a palace, with 15 rooms, five of which have 18th-floor views of Central Park. At $95 million, you'd think it would come with a doorman too. But at high-end buildings in New York, basics like a doorman and a super come extra -- as much as $60,000 extra.

The high cost of Manhattan real-estate is usually measured by the sales price. But for many buyers, it's the maintenance fees that break the bank.

Monthly maintenance fees in Manhattan have soared to an average of $1.70 per square foot, meaning that a 1,200 square foot condo will cost you $2,000 a month in maintenance fees, on top of your mortgage, utilities and (usually) property taxes.

Maintenance fees have continued to climb throughout the recession even as prices dipped. Average maintenance fees have risen 30 percent since 2008, according to Jonathan Miller at Miller Samuel, the New York appraisal firm. That's more than twice the rate of overall inflation.

More from CNBC: In the Hamptons, 'The deals are gone'

The increase has been driven mostly by higher costs of building insurance, underlying mortgages, fuel and building staff, like doormen and supers.

But Miller said high maintenance fees can derail a deal or cause even wealthy buyers to sell if the fees get too high.

He said that some of the newer developments that came with high prices and high maintenance fees were forced to reduce their prices when buyers balked at the high monthly payments.

"There was an assumption during the boom that the wealthy didn't care about maintenance and you could saddle an apartment with high fees and not have an impact," he said. "That turned out not to be true. There is an inverse relationship between carrying costs and market value."

Still, some rare apartments have both sky-high prices tags and high maintenance fees. The 18th floor of the Sherry-Netherland, currently on the market for $95 million, has monthly maintenance fees of $60,000.?

More from CNBC: America's Most Expensive Homes

The apartment is part of the hotel, so the fees include twice-daily maid service, spa services and other ultra-plush amenities.?

But the apartment is proof that some of New York's wealthy are still willing to pay more in monthly maintenance fees than some Americans pay for their house. We'll see, of course, whether the apartment sells at its price.

Tumor cells engineer acidity to drive cell invasion

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at Wayne State University School of Medicine investigated the acidity in solid tumors to determine if pH levels play a role in cancer cell invasion in surrounding tissues. They found that an acidic microenvironment can drive cancer cells to spread and propose that neutralizing pH would inhibit further invasion, providing a therapeutic opportunity to slow the progression of cancers.

Their study appeared in the Jan. 3 online release of Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

According to the study's corresponding author, Robert J. Gillies, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Cancer Imaging & Metabolism at Moffitt, acidity in solid tumors is the result of an increased fermentative metabolism combined with poor delivery of blood to tissues.

In this study, tumor invasion and pH were monitored in immunodeficient laboratory mice hosting a variety of tumors. "We monitored the test animals over time using microscopy and found that the highest regions of tumor invasion corresponded to areas with the lowest pH," Gillies explained. "Tumor invasion did not occur in regions with normal or near normal pH levels. Furthermore, when we neutralized the acidity with oral sodium bicarbonate, the invasion was halted."

Researchers proposed that the acidic pH of the tumor microenvironment represents a "niche engineering" strategy on the part of tumor cells, promoting invasion and growth of malignant tumors into surrounding tissue. Niche engineering is a concept in ecology describes how plants and animals alter their environment to in ways that promote their own growth and survival over their competitors. "We have long regarded cancers cells as an invading species," said study co-author Robert Gatenby, M.D., chair of the Diagnostic Imaging Services and Integrated Mathematical Oncology departments at Moffitt.

A key to this process of adaptation and invasion is increased glucose metabolism in the tumor. "The vast majority of malignant tumors metabolize glucose at high rates," Gillies said. "We have proposed that there is a direct, causative link between increased glucose metabolism and the ability of cancer cells to invade and metastasize."

According to the research, elevated glucose metabolism is the cause of increased acidity in the tumor microenvironment. Most tumors develop an abnormal vascular network that tends to be poorly organized and leaky, disrupting blood flow and hampering the delivery of oxygen.

"This poorly organized vascular system has a two-fold effect on tumor acidity," explained Gatenby. "First, it subjects tumor regions to poor perfusion, which restricts oxygen and increases the rate of glucose fermentation. Second, the poor perfusion hampers the ability to eliminate the resulting acids, resulting in very low pH in surrounding tissues."

As tumor cells adapt to increasing acidity, niche engineering through normal cell death and new blood vessel formation occurs in the tumor and the immune response is suppressed.

"Tumor cells perform niche engineering by creating an acidic environment that is not toxic to the malignant cells but, through its negative effects on normal cells and tissues, promotes local invasion of malignant cells," Gatenby said.

The researchers suggested that targeting this activity with buffers and other mechanisms aimed at increasing pH levels will likely provide a valuable alternative to traditional therapies focused entirely on killing tumor cells.

Funding for this study came from federal grants U54 CA143970; R01 CA 077575; R01 CA 131990S.

Film review: Good action, pokey plot in 'Parker' | The Salt Lake Tribune

This film publicity image released by FilmDistrict shows Jason Statham, left, and Jennifer Lopez in a scene from "Parker." (AP Photo/FilmDistrict, Jack English)

"Parker" delivers what you?d expect when you have Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez on a poster ? he kicks butt, she shakes hers ? but it?s a depressingly static exercise.

Statham plays Parker, the literary creation of the late Donald E. Westlake (under his alter ego Richard Stark), a tough thief with a code that emphasizes no killing of innocent bystanders and no double-crosses. Both happen after a heist at the Ohio State Fair, when his colleagues? mistakes kill a fairgoer and their greed leads them to shoot Parker and leave him for dead.

?

HH

?Parker?

Opens Friday, Jan. 25, at theaters everywhere; rated R for strong violence, language throughout and brief sexual content/nudity; 118 minutes.

He recovers and tracks his former crew to West Palm Beach, Fla., where they are planning a massive diamond heist. Parker wants to pinch the jewels from the thieves while also killing them. He enlists a struggling real-estate agent, Leslie Rodgers (that?s J-Lo), who rationalizes his plan by saying "everybody steals from somebody."

Director Taylor Hackford ("Ray," "An Officer and a Gentleman") provides some glossy images of south Florida excess, but John J. McLaughlin?s script slows the pacing with extraneous characters and a muddled plot.

Statham again proves he?s fine putting the hurt on baddies, but flounders during the movie?s faltering attempts at romance and drama.

Webinar: How to Write a Winning business Plan

If you missed the webinar on ?How to Write a Winning Business Plan,??you can still watch it below. You get to see how quick and easy it is to create both a dynamic business pitch and a business plan that?supports your brilliant business idea. We?ve also included answers to the questions we were not able to get to during the live webinar. Enjoy! Webinar Q&A

Q: How many people in the company can use LivePlan at the same time?
A: A basic account includes 2 users (the owner and a collaborator) and can be upgraded to:

  • 3 users = + ??9.95 /month
  • 4 users = + 19.90 /month
  • 5 users = + 29.85 /month

Q: Once you save the plan do you save it on your computer or on a cloud server?
A: If you need to download a copy of your plan for printing or emailing to people who want a hard copy, you can do that from the ?Print? section within LivePlan. However, the beauty of LivePlan being hosted in the cloud is that you can access your Pitch, Plan, or Scoreboard from any Internet connection. This allows you to update your planning information and present it (via guest accounts) to lenders, investors, mentors, students, business partners and more. So you can either save a static copy to your desktop, or keep your evolving plan within LivePlan (which we recommend) so you can update it regularly, and share it with others as needed.

Q: (LivePlan vs. standard plans) ?At the end of the year what happens to information/ if no renewal?
A: You have the choice:

  • You can delete your account when you?re ?finished? with the plan and we will delete your plan from LivePlan entirely.
  • Or, you can put your account into ?archive? mode in which case we charge a small maintenance fee ($2.99/mo) and we maintain a secure copy of your plan and account in case you choose to revisit the plan next quarter, year, etc.

Q: Can LivePlan be sold as an affiliate in a package like we have the Business Plan Pro and training sessions?
A: Absolutely! Visit our affiliate page to get set up today!

Q: As far as ROI in the hospitality business, what would be best: a certain % if so what % would be reasonable, a concrete number, etc?
A: It really depends on what kind of hospitality business ? small hotel, large hotel, bar, restaurant, food court, etc. We found this site that gives a very good overview of identifying KPIs (key performance indicators) in the restaurant, cafe, catering, clubs and hotels.

Q: I love the Dave and Busters example you gave during the webinar! Are there any business executives you can think of that would be interested in hearing about a completely unique sports bar/restaurant idea? Good idea to involve people from out of town, or if you are starting in a specific city should you limit to investors from your city?
A: We suggest signing up for Gust.com ? it?s free and you?ll gain access to thousands of angel investors across the globe. Some investors on Gust select industries they are interested in, so you can search to see if any investors are interested in food and beverage or hospitality deals.

Q: As an owner of existing software, is there a price for those upgrading to LivePlan?
A: Since LivePlan is a completely separate tool from Business Plan Pro, the pricing is separate as well. You can either ?pay-as-you-go? at only $19.95 month, or pay for a full year and save over 40%. Learn more here. Keep in mind, LivePlan is not a standard business plan ? it?s the business plan evolved ? where you can Pitch, Plan and Track your growth all in one very easy to use tool. Check out of features page.

Q: Can we create multiple business plans for different companies?
A: Yes, a basic account has the ability to host 3 active plans (with unlimited archived plans) and can be upgraded to:

  • 8 active plans = +9.95 / month
  • 13 active plans = + 19.90 / month
  • 18 active plans = + 29.85 / month

Q: If one uses LivePlan to complete a business plan, does your service include a business plan critic before I present my plan to potential investors?
A
: We currently do not have a service to critique your business plan, but we are hoping to launch such a service late this year. I recommend you follow our LivePlan blog to stay tuned. In the meantime, we recommend you contact a Small Business Development Center or SCORE office in your area (for U.S.). If you?re outside of the U.S. they are several non-profit and government organizations that offer free advising services. We recommend starting with contacting your local university or college system.

Q: If the business plan addresses a sensitive niche in the market, how can you make sure you keep certain information from your business plan private? Also I am wondering if we should we do that?
A: If there?s sensitive information that you need to ensure is not public, I would suggest this:

  1. Create your sharable plan (name it something that you?ll recognize as the public version)
  2. Enter all the relevant data and text but skip anything that you see that requires sensitive information
  3. Once you?ve created and filled in the public plan, go to the My Plans drop down and choose All Plans
  4. Make a copy of the ?shareable plan? and then rename it to something that will indicate it is your internal only plan.
  5. Add the sensitive information to the Internal Only plan and share the public version on the plan with your Lender, Investor and/or Mentors. You can safely remove the skipped sections from the sharable plan as well if needed.

Q: I want to plan a membership campaign for our association, as well as a plan for the development of an archives gallery, I need to plug in the strategic plan for the membership campaign. This is a committee plan and not a business plan. Yes-it will take staff time, but I am a volunteer that will give my services for free. How do you track the potential cost of having to hire a company to develop a membership campaign? Would this software help me to present my points and what it will take to build our membership value?
A: LivePlan?s Pitch page or Scoreboard are both excellent tools for showing value of non-profits and associations. As mentioned during the webinar, you can edit the outline of the business plan to match a Strategic Plan?s outline (i.e. mission, vision, fundraising strategy, board development strategy, program overview, etc.).

Q: What about pitching the development of a plan for setting up the archives gallery that will require special inventory and personeel salaries, as well as what it will take to keep it going- ie, alarms, temperature controls, special handling of archives, etc. Is this the software for me?
A: LivePlan is highly customizable and can be used to create financial forecasts (sales, payroll, expenses, Cash Flow, Profit and Loss, etc) for most any company. You can customize the inputs to show whatever level of detail you need. That said, I always like to stress that for accounting, looking backwards, you need ever increasing amounts of detail. But, with planning, looking forward, you should try to make things as general or simple as possible. It can be a highly frustrating experience trying to forecast incredibly detailed expenses looking forward, especially if a higher level view is all that is required.

Q: There are a lot of sample Business Plans available in LivePlan. Is there a repository of winning plans? ?Does some resource exist like this on the internet?
A: We conducted national (U.S.) ?LivePlan $10,000 Boost? business plan competition in 2012, and saw many plans that were well written. We are in the process of gathering those plans to offer as sample plans. In the meantime, we recommend you check out our library of sample plans on our Bplans free content site.

Q: Can this also be used to pitch and plan an internal plan?
A: Absolutely ? it?s meant for both external and internal pitching. That?s why we set the annual pricing to be affordable for small businesses. It?s only $139.95 to use LivePlan as an internal management tool.

Q: Mortgage industry ? do you have any research on this?
A: Palo Alto Software doesn?t do market research as a service but we do partner with companies that do have that as their main business. You can search for Market Research data for by industry on our site.?

Q: Where can I find investors for health and wellness?
A: We suggest signing up for Gust.com ? it?s free and you?ll gain access to thousands of angel investors across the globe.

Q: Can LivePlan be used to help a ?set up a franchised company, and how can this be done? (that would be getting a location from an established company, such as Jiffy Lube, Macdonalds, etc)
A: The plan for a franchised business isn?t technically much different from any plan for an existing business that?s being bought by new owners. The situation of how the business comes to be is more unique, but the financials are very similar to any plan. The exception to this would be if you were the franchiser, in which case you might want to configure a plan in LivePlan to use as your template and then provide that template to any potential Franchisee?s via Collaborator accounts. This would give the franchiser a good means to getting data from different franchisee?s in a format that makes it easy for comparison.

Q: Most teams consist of 3 people but the basic plan only allows for 2 people. Will it be upped to 3 as the minimum?
A: The basic account includes 2 people (owner + 1 collaborator) plus unlimited guest accounts (guests can view, print and comment, but not actually make changes). Additional collaborators can be added by upgrading the account.
