FCC Chairman?Julius Genachoski wants to bring faster internet to the US by challenging all 50 states to have gigabit internet by 2015, following Google's Fiber project in Kansas City.
Gigabit internet (1,000,000,000 bits per second)?offers crazy speeds thanks to the use of fiber optics. Google was the first to offer gigabit on a large scale in the US, offering folks in Kansas City an?Internet and?TV?service?as a $120 per month package.?
Genachoski doesn't want the entire US to be covered by then, as that would be one big task, but he wants at least one community.?
"The U.S. needs a critical mass of gigabit communities nationwide so that innovators can develop next-generation applications and services that will drive economic growth and global competitiveness," Genachoski said.
Of course, in the UK, parliament isn't really pushing for anywhere near this level of speed.
If you're lucky - or unlucky - enough to live in an area where the internet service providers can make money from you, then fast internet access is achievable. Virgin Media has 120mbps right now, and BT has 330mbps on the way, but no one bar a few regional providers has hinted that we'll be getting gigabit any time soon.
If you ask us, the universal service commitment should be much higher. The higher, in fact, the better for everyone.
After all, if we can start moving people away from broadcast TV and on to IPTV then there's a lot of spare frequencies for mobile services. And if there are better mobile services, then mobile broadband speeds will rise too.
